Lawyers for two Guantanamo Bay detainees cited the Hobby Lobby decision to argue for their clients’ rights to perform prayers during Ramadan. However, federal courts have argued that the detainees didn’t qualify as persons under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Wow.

That’s the idea that’s animating the Christian right: They really do believe that everyone else owes them, that we are obligated to tithe to their churches and pray to their God and if we don’t want to do that, we should somehow be treated as less than fully American. You may think you’re just exercising personal choice when you get married in a park or choose not to hang Christmas decorations, but conservative Christians see this as an attack on their “right” to live in a society that flatters their beliefs everywhere they go.

British researchers have created the ‘new black’ of the science world - and it is being dubbed super black.

The material absorbs all but 0.035 per cent of light, a new world record, and is so dark the human eye struggles to discern its shape and dimension, giving the appearance of a black hole.

Named Vantablack, or super black, it also conducts heat seven and half times more effectively than copper, and is ten times stronger than steel.

It is created by Surrey NanoSystems using carbon nanotubes, which are 10,000 thinner than human hair and so miniscule that light cannot get in but can pass into the gaps in between.

>Astounding photographs of Iceland’s raw natureLooking at this collection of photographs from Australian photographer Tom Blachford’s trip to Iceland it isn’t hard to beleive that many Icelandic people still firmly believe in spirits and fairies.
From Blachford’s series the country seems prehistoric, even primordial. The occasional houses seem frail and out of place compared to the looming mountains, monstrous weather formations and the slow inexorable pace of the glaciers. It must be quite a thing to live in such a place, sandwiched among icy waters, gushing subterranean steam and bitter snow. We don’t know about you but it makes us itch to get out of the city!
